I debated taking some time off this morning when the alarm woke me up at 5:45. I started thinking of alternatives to running, I could go to my apartment gym and hop on the elliptical, I could move my swimming work out from Wednesday to Monday, I could just roll over and go back to sleep….etc. Then I let Abbie outside to do her morning business and knew running was what I wanted to do. So I went upstairs, put a sports bra on, and hit the road.

This morning I sought out to try a new little loop in my neighborhood. I love changing it up and discovering new routes.

Here are my stats. (Unfortunately I don’t have an HRM, yet, so I don’t know my calories count)

  • Distance: 4.13 miles
  • Time: 51 mins 24 secs (this time includes a 5 minute cool down walk)

I always take it easy on my morning runs, so please don’t expect a quick time here. J

For breakfast I decided to try one of my new fruits I bought yesterday.

Introducing the Cactus Pear.

When we found these yesterday, my Dad reminded me of the scene in Jungle Book, where Baloo is singing about the prickly pears (which are the same thing as cactus pears. I googled the lyrics this morning and now the bare necessities song is stuck in my head.

Now when you pick a pawpaw

Or a prickly pear

And you prick a raw paw

Well, next time beware

Don’t pick the prickly pear by the paw

When you pick a pear try to use the claw

But you don’t need to use the claw

When you pick a pear of the big pawpaw

Have I given you a clue?

Now doesn’t that bring up childhood memories?

Here is what the fruit looks like without its shell. It has like two layers of skin. One is the tough outer layer and then a slimy layer underneath that.

You have to watch out for the seeds. They are kind of big, but crunchy.

I added the cactus pear and a handful of grapes to a ½ cup serving of Kashi GO Lean Crunch and a ¾ cup of Kashi Honey Sunshine cereal.

Overall the fruit was ok. It wasn’t very sweet for my likings. Maybe it wasn’t ripe enough? It was a fun fruit to try, but I don’t see myself buying it again. I have another fun fruit to try tomorrow morning. J
